Getting started

Before installing the new ROM on your Mi smartphone, it is important to back up all the data. Those who are running MIUI V5/MIUI 6/MIUI 7 or MIUI 8 stable ROM on their phones, can directly upgrade via Fastboot. Remove any security lock on your smartphone. You can do so by visiting Xiaomi’s unlocking site.

Flash using Updater app

Download MUI 9 recovery ROM for your smartphone from the links above. Copy the downloaded file to your phone’s internal storage. Launch the Updater app on your smartphone, tap the three dots on the top right and select Choose Update Package. Then you navigate to the location where you stored your recovery file and select it.

OTA updating process

This is the simplest form of updating your phone. Launch updater app and check for latest updates. If you see an update to be installed, simply tap the Download Now button and wait for the process to complete. Reboot the phone after completing the download and you’ll be running the latest MIUI 9 on your smartphone. Also, note that this step works only if the new software is available for download over-the-air. Flash MIUI 9 using Fastboot Once the device is unlocked and you’ve downloaded the right Fastboot file for your smartphone from the links above, download the latest Mi Flash Tool.

Next step is to download the latest .Net Frameworks via Windows Update (automatic updates should be enabled) by clicking on Download & Install in the pop-up window. Disable Driver Signature Enforcement option in Windows. You can follow this guide (Click HERE) to walk you through step by step. Turn off the device, press and hold Volume and Power buttons of your phone simultaneously to boot into Fastboot mode. Connect your device to the Windows PC or laptop via a micro USB cable. Extract the downloaded ROM zip files to the root folder (C:) of the computer for easy flashing. Copy the path of the root folder. Launch the Mi Flash tool and paste the full path of the folder. Select 'Clean All' option in the Mi Flash to avoid unwanted errors during the flash process. Click the Refresh button in case your device is not listed there. Ensure that updated drivers are installed for your phone on the computer.

Finally, when the phone is recognized and mounted on the computer, just select the device in the tool and click Flash. Wait until the flashing process completes. Do not interrupt the flashing process as it might inadvertently brick your device. Your device should automatically reboot once the flashing is completed. To verify the installation was successful, go to Settings, then About Phone and check if the software shows MIUI 9.
